Afghanistan

Two stories have come out of Afghanistan this week, reflecting the uneven progress of women's rights and other basic freedoms in the country.

The editor of a magazine called Women's Rights has been arrested at the bequest of a presidential advisor, after he published articles criticising hard-line interpretations of Islamic law.

Ali Mohaqiq Nasab's imprisonment follows a direct complaint by a religious advisor to president Hamid Karzai.

Meanwhile, early indications are that a number of women's rights activists have won seats in parliament.
