200 years since the end of the slave trade, slavery is alive and well in England

Two hundred years ago, the British Parliament outlawed the slave trade.

As part of the events going on to mark the anniversary, the BBC is running a series of features on modern slavery.

Every year, around 4,000 women are trafficked into England and sold into sex slavery.

  • Learn about what the police are doing to tackle trafficking in Sussex
  • Read about efforts to counsel and rehabilitate women who have escaped from traffickers
  • And the work of the Poppy Project, which provides shelter for trafficked women
  • Finally, read the personal testimony of trafficked women, including 19 year-old Rosemary from Nigeria, Nicoleta from Romania, who was trafficked into the UK at the age of 18, Edita and Jiera from Lithuania and Dean Sim Lin from Malaysia
