You don't own me

You know that song "It's my party and I'll cry if I want to... cry if I want to, cry if I want to..."?

Well, Hazel from the fabulous Buffy blog Let's Fold Scarves has tracked down some footage of another track by the woman who wrote It's My Party, Lesley Gore.

It's called 'You Don't Own Me' and it's brilliant. Here are some of the lyrics, again courtesy of Let's Fold Scarves:

You don’t own me, I’m not just one of your many toys
You don’t own me, don’t say I can’t go with other boys

And don’t tell me what to do
And don’t tell me what to say
And please, when I go out with you
Don’t put me on display, ’cause

You don’t own me, don’t try to change me in any way
You don’t own me, don’t tie me down ’cause I’d never stay

Interesting tidbit: Gore came out (publically) as a lesbian in 2005, at the age of 59.
