90 years after women won the right to vote…

It was 90 years yesterday since the first women gained the right to vote in the UK. The Guardian has a gallery of suffragette photos which is really interesting.

But what is perhaps more revealing is this wallchart by the Electoral Reform Society, which represents in graphic form how many constitutuancies have never had a female MP. Since 1918.

Great swathes of the country remain ‘blue’ strongholds - meaning that their electorates have only ever been represented by a man. Interestingly, these are clumped together. Areas which have had female MPs are usually linked next to each other.

What is so good about this map, I think, is that it highlights how unrepresentative the current system is.
