Let’s all say “yay!” for Ellen Page
By Louise Livesey | 19 February 2008, 19:39
Actor Ellen Page, hot on the heels of her success in Hard Candy has dismissed questions that her new film, Juno is pro-life.
“I call myself a feminist when people ask me if I am, and of course I am ‘cause it’s about equality, so I hope everyone is. You know you’re working in a patriarchal society when the word feminist has a weird connotation. “Hippie” has a weird connotation. “Liberal” has a weird connotation.”

Her response to the question of Juno not having an abortion is simply, that’s not the film.
It happens to be a film about a girl who has a baby and gives it to a yuppie couple. That’s what the movie’s about.

Surely the point of pro-choice is to be able to choose - and Juno does.

I found a couple things in Juno problematic, but the fact that she didn't get an abortion was not one of them. It's not as if the pro-life side is represented particularly nobly. The girl protesting the abortion clinic is portrayed as pretty ridiculous, and she's all alone out there.

I loved Juno. I did make me cry a lot towards the end but I found it was a beautifully made film and Ellen Page was fab in it. I was actually really concerned that she might decide to keep the baby with the father which would have been completely unrealistic. I also was really pleased that when Ellen Page was interviewed in the Guardian she identified herself as a feminist and said "As a girl, you're supposed to love Sleeping Beauty. I mean who wants to love Sleeping Beauty when you can be Aladdin?" . Refreshing for a rising Hollywood starlet.
