Quick announcements - comments on features and reviews

You might notice that I’ve turned comments off in my last post, announcing a new feature in the main part of the website.
When we decided to give live commenting a go, back in February, we were really clear that this should only apply to the blog, not to the features and reviews that we run on a monthly basis.
Well, it seems like by default this has not happened - because people just started to post comments on the blog post announcing a new feature or review. Therefore, I’m going to be turning off comments on these posts from now on.
One of the reasons that we don’t have live commenting throughout The F-Word is to provide a bit of a protective barrier for our contributors - although us bloggers have all thrown ourselves into the commenting ring, as it were, that’s not what our contributors really sign up for. It also splits the comments I think a bit confusingly between the blog and the monthly comment round-up.
However, you can still comment on these articles as usual - it’s just a case of sending in your thoughts through the comment form, as always (you can find the link at the bottom of each page).

In order to keep this blog as a feminist and friendly space, comments will be subject to some rules. We do not seek to censor debate: the beauty of the internet is that anyone can set up their own blog or website to express their views.

I think as a general principle for articles this is fine, but I wondered whether an exception could be made for the problem page. I thought it was really fun, and thought-provoking, to hear all the different answers to women's dilemmas. I think that to wait until the end of the month to hear these thoughts would be a bit late, especially as people often work off each other when giving different responses.
I actually think this is true of some of the articles as well- in that they are good conversation starters and the comments at the end of the month don't allow that conversation to be had. But, I agree that if that leaves the author open to attack it is a problem, and I think it is fine to make a distinction between the blog and the features for that reason.

FA - That makes sense. I'm going to go back and allow comments on Ask A Feminist, which may shortly be migrating from 'features' to 'blog' anyway :)

Hi Jess and FA - I agree with this, it sounds reasonable for the Ask a Feminist section.
We might look at having comments against each of the features/reviews in future but this will be some way off if at all.
