Round up

It looks like Warner Bros has effectively ditched The Women, a comedy with an all-female star-studded cast, Nikki Finke says. It's not my kind of film, and may well be terrible, but as Finke points out, it seems to be a very weird business decision to sideline a movie with plenty of Sex and the City clone-appeal:

Puh-leeze, who indeed wants a low-budget $16.5 million chick flick written, directed and produced by one of the biz's greatest women's comedy writers of seminal Murphy Brown fame... That stars quality "name" actress like Meg Ryan, Annette Bening, Eva Mendes, Debra Messing, Bette Midler, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Debi Mazur, Joanna Gleason, Carrie Fisher, Lynn Whitfield and Cloris Leachman...

It's even a re-make, and you know how Hollywood loves those these days.

But guess who was part of the decision? Warner executive Jeff "we will no longer make films with women leads" Robinov. Grr! Via Feminist Law Professors.

Harpymarx reports on the latest Heinz boycott news:

As we know Heinz bottled it the other day and spinelessly capitulated to the 200 or so complaints in response to their advert that showed two blokes kiss. And now Stonewall and Gaydar Radio have called for a boycott of Heinz, along with a group that has been set up on Facebook to protest at Heinz’s bigoted surrender. Also, there have been calls by MPs to reinstate the advert. Unlike the 200 “Shocked from Surbiton” complaints Heinz received, will they listen to the 2,000 signatures on the online petition in protest at the withdrawal of the advert?

Sarah Haskins does Botox:

I know it's a total feminist blogosphere cliche by now, but this woman is brilliant.

Ben Joseph from McSweeney's:

The Lion, the Witch
and the Wardrobe

C.S. LEWIS: Finally, a utopia ruled by children and populated by talking animals.

THE WITCH: Hi, I'm a sexually mature woman of power and confidence.

C.S. LEWIS: Ah! Kill it, lion Jesus!

Again, via those Feminist Law Professors.

And, finally, research by Stonewall found widespread support among Britons for legislation against homophobic hate crime and discrimination - see women'sgrid for more info.

Any chance of adding 'No Surbitonphobic comments'? It's a bit tough on those of us who live there and aren't shocked!
