Podcast addresses race & gender in the US election

by Jess McCabe // 6 October 2008, 14:02

Addicted to Race tackled some interesting issues in the latest episode on "Race, Gender and the Election".

Carmen is joined by Jenn from Reappropriate, and they talk through claims that Sarah Palin is a feminist, when so many of her policies are flat-out anti-woman.

Jenn has some really interesting things to say, though, about why it might be that some women are ready to vote for the McCain/Palin ticket just to see a woman in the Whitehouse, and how this compares to black Republicans crossing party lines to support Barack Obama.

They also talk about the "Bradley Effect" (to paraphrase, this means people saying they will vote for a black candidate, but baulking when they get to the voting booth). Well worth a listen, even for the election-weary.
