The Emma Humphreys Memorial Prize 10th Anniversary Awards Ceremony

by Helen G // 8 October 2008, 21:05

EHMP logoThe Emma Humphreys Memorial Prize is awarded each year to an individual woman who has worked to stop violence against women; there is also an annual group award. These awards were set up in memory of Emma Humphreys: writer, poet, campaigner and survivor of male violence. At only 17 she was sent to prison for life after she killed her violent boyfriend who was also her pimp. She fought a heroic legal battle to clear her name and won her appeal, inspiring many women in the process and changing the law. Emma died in 1998 aged only 30, after spending 10 years in prison. Emma's memory lives on in this prize which recognises the work of all women who work to combat male violence.

A strictly limited number of tickets are still available, price £65 each - and all money raised goes directly to funding the prize.

Compered by Lisa Alabaksh, the event will take place on Friday 24th October (6pm-midnight) at The Drill Hall, 16 Chenies Street, London, WC1E 7EX. The venue is fully accessible and there will be sign language interpreters. The evening includes a film about the life of Emma Humphreys and the EHMP by director Pratibha Parmar; and special guests include:

  • Andi Osho (winner of the Nivea Funny Women Awards 2007)

  • Urban Gypsies (Tribal belly dance with an edge!)

  • Sheboom (Europe's largest female drumming ensemble)
