Abortion doughnuts? Or is that ‘doughnuts on demand’?

The US doughnut establishment Krispy Kreme has been “accused” of giving away “pro-abortion doughnuts”.

I kid you not.

Krispy Kreme plans to offer a “free doughnut of choice to every customer” on Obama’s Inauguration Day, to mark “American’s sense of pride and freedom of choice”.

The average person would probably interpret the use of the word “choice” here to mean “jam or chocolate sprinkles? with a hole or without a hole?” in the first instance and “you’ve just chosen a president!” in the second instance.

But, according to the Miami New Times, the American Life League has issued a press release arguing that this is a coded pro-choice campaign, and Krispy Kreme are actually giving away free abortion doughnuts. The headline for the American Life League press release?

KRISPY KREME CELEBRATES OBAMA WITH PRO-ABORTION DOUGHNUTS

Actually, it’s be kind of sweet if Krispy Kreme did offer free doughnuts to celebrate women’s reproductive freedoms. (Although I’m not a fan, so if there was a choice of say, an abortion-on-demand brownie, or a pro-choice cupcake, that’d be picture perfect.)

However, I’ve got to say this is a bit suspect. Obviously the extremist anti-woman group is trying to catch media attention, what with the doughnut thing. It can’t be good press, surely, to overreact so massively? Maybe the idea is to try and push Krispy Kreme into saying they’re not pro-choice?

Whilst it would be awesome if Krispy Kreme is pro-choice (in that anybody being pro-choice is a good thing), I hardly think that a dougnut company would be making a coded stand for women's rights. Sure, they might, but why would a company be making some kind of statement, unasked for, which many Americans would campaign vehemently about? Unless it's to annoy Bush...

The statment really did look like it was about toppings and yay for being allowed to pick a president! kind of choice.

They could always try balancing it with 'anti-choice fruitcakes'.

its the hole. i hate to get all freudian on this but considering that most anti-women groups are populated with immature men with the brains of whelks, i would'nt be at all surprised if they think its a "coded messege" about reproductive rights simply because krismy kreme are giving away a soft thing with a hole in it, possibly containing sticky stuff.

the slogan might be a little suspect to the paranoid but i bet there wouldent be all this fuss if they were giving away free brownies.

btw jess, the cupcake idea was awsome, id buy one. :)

You don't know whether to laugh or cry... it's a hilarious story, yet tragic at the same time, because it's true...

I'll tell you something though, I've now got this craving for some 'Pro-choice' doughnuts, mmmm.
