Can you help us redesign The F-Word?

Much as we love The F-Word, we’ve been thinking for a while now that the site (the whole of The F-Word, not just the blog) needs a bit of a revamp*.

If there are any fantastic web designers out there, please email me if you think you might be interested for more info.

*I’ve got to say upfront that there’s unlikely we’ll be able to pay much if anything (other than the kudos of having designed the site and our eternal gratitude!) - because we don’t really have much in the way of income, and we are a volunteer-run site.

I can offer fresh baked chocolate chip cookies too if that helps?

I think it could do with a revamp to make it more user friendly and vibrant. Good luck with it! I'm afraid I'm of no help on the design side but hope someone else is able to.

To be honest, I like the web-site as it is now. I like the simplicity of it; it is well-organised and easy to navigate. This simplicity means that attention is not drawn towards snazzy features and colours, but concentrates on what is really important, which is the content, the articles.

However, I appreciate that the site may appeal to younger readers more if it contained brighter colour and lots of images - if it were more vibrant, like Amity says. If that were to be incorporated, however, I do ask that whoever designs the new look keeps it tasteful. Please keep some of the simplicity and don't clutter it up. Please don't turn it into Seventeen or Heat (not that you would, I'm sure, but you know what I mean, hopefully).

This site is much easier to navigate and much more generally acessible than similar sites such as Feministing or Hoyden. Though a revamp could be a great thing for the site I feel that you need to make sure you retain that user-friendliness.

Yep, we definitely want to keep it user friendly, accessible and simply designed... :-)

I like the website but I agree that it could be a bit more visually appealing.

Speaking of magazines I would love to see The F Word as a magazine on my newsagent's shelf btw. Any chance?

I'd also like to add that I find it very easy to use as it is. Please no vibrant glaring colours that will make eyes hurt!

Sorry about the OT: I would have contacted Amanda privately, but there's no blog link so I can't see any way to do that! Just wanted to say that we try to be as accessible as possible at Hoyden (esp with disability being one of our bloggy themes), so if you have any particular issue, we're more than open to receiving specific complaints, and we'll do what we can. Sometimes things like transcripts take time, because we're dealing with life, parenting, and disability ourselves. Email hoydenz at gmail dot com if the contact form isn't working for you.

Annnnd back on topic: if there's a way to subscribe to individual comment threads at the moment, I can't see it - that would be really useful.

I think a subtle makeover would be enough: change of font; colours; use some (stock) images on the template as well as individual posts?

Nothing to take the attention too far away from the words, but to add a bit of oomph to the design. Remaining clutter-free is a bold choice few web producers make - too busy pleasing Google than their returning readers.

I like the layout/ visuals of the site but could you do something with the Resources section please. The weblinks is just a long list. Plus the events listing isn't very user friendly.

Well as the person who designed the current and previous versions of The F-Word, I'm very glad to hear people like it!

And if you want to go back into the past, I've screenshots of the previous designs on my blog :)

A wee suggestion: any chance there could be a direct link to the comments for each of the features articles? At the moment, if you're reading an article and want to see what people said about it, there doesn't appear to be an easy way to do it. You'd have to remember the article you're reading (which, I appreciate isn't that hard) as well as the month it was published and then go to the comments tab and look for the article from there. It would be nice to be able to click a link at the bottom of the article to take you directly there.

I like the F-word web site the way that it is. It is refreshingly simple and easy to navigate in a world of over flashy take to long to load poorly designed web sites.

Not everyone has super fast Internet access. It is the message that is important, not how much computer wizardry it contains.

I don't think you need to change the design of the site, just the fact it's so boring!! You'd have to be half dead of life or deranged to want to continue to post here. Stories about iced cookies being the highlight wanting to read the site? That's when you know this place is screwed. Trying to use the psychology of being anti radical and adapting an 'equally stretching to ants' tone to appeal to and hide from the haters, you'd have thought using basic psychology of making people smile instead of throw up with depression coming here would be simple...

Old post but I was thinking I'd prefer it if instead of a most recent comments box there was a most recently commented on post box. Often if a post is controversial the most recent comments box just features comments on that post and you don't get to see what other things are being debated.

Have your say

In order to keep this blog as a feminist and friendly space, comments will be subject to some rules. We do not seek to censor debate: the beauty of the internet is that anyone can set up their own blog or website to express their views.

  1. This blog is a safe and friendly space for feminists and feminist allies. Debate and critique are welcome where it is constructive and deepens analysis or understanding. Anti-feminist comments will not be approved. We get to decide what's anti-feminist.
  2. All comments must be approved by one of the bloggers. For this reason, there may be a delay before your comment appears.
  3. No sexist, racist, homophobic, transphobic, classist, ablist comments, comments which make personal attacks on any blogger or commenter, or comments that are otherwise deemed offensive by us will be posted.
  4. Trolls will be banned from commenting. We get to decide who is a troll.
  5. No anonymous comments - please feel free to use your real name or make one up, though.
  6. Be nice.
