Our best wishes to Dr Katherine Rake, Fawcett Society

by Catherine Redfern // 10 June 2009, 12:21

Dr Katherine Rake is to leave her post as Director of the Fawcett Society after seven years. The Society is now advertising for a new Chief Executive.

Rake has achieved so much in the time she's been at Fawcett, including a determined campaign to reclaim the word 'feminist'.

Fawcett's press release says:

Under Katherine's direction, Fawcett has seen tremendous growth and a range of landmark campaign successes, including securing a change in the way lap dancing clubs are licensed, establishing the Commission on Women and the Criminal Justice system to investigate women's experience of all aspects of the criminal justice system, successful lobbying to ensure that the Government's pension reform in 2006 reflected the reality of women's lives, shaping the 2009 Equality Bill and campaigning to end the gender pay gap, and establishing the high profile Gender Equality Forum to drive the future of gender equality across a series of focussed debates.

In 2008 she received an OBE for services to equal opportunities.

She has been a keen supporter of the wider feminist community and been very supportive of this website, new forms of feminist activism, and many of us personally.

You can see some of her writing at the Guardian.

Rake will become Chief Executive of the Family and Parenting Institute later in the year.

I'm sure we all wish her the best for the future.
