Rape Crisis Protest
by Laura Woodhouse // 16 July 2009, 10:00
There will be a rally outside London's City Hall on Monday 20th July, 12.30 - 14.30, to protest Boris Johnson's cuts to Rape Crisis Centre funding. The organisers are demanding:
The immediate establishment of a cross-government, ring-fenced Rape Crisis fund of £5m a year.Greater investment in Rape Crisis by local and regional statutory agencies that refer women to centres.
The number and capacity of centres increased so every woman and girl can access support.
The professionalism of Rape Crisis workers recognised and appropriately remunerated through improved funding to Rape Crisis centres.
The impacts of sexual violence are long-term and far-reaching and funding for services should reflect this.

Terrible as it is, the first thing that runs through my mind is "at least they get funding".
Here in Northern Ireland, we have one crisis centre which receives no government funding whatsoever. They survive on a small grant from Belfast City Council and donations.
But fair play to them, I'm glad they're protesting this, maybe people here could follow their examples.

The latest MP to refuse to sign our EDM 1604 supporting funding for Rape Crisis Centres is Siobhain McDonagh Labour MP for Mitcham and Morden.
Did you know there is only 1 Rape Crisis Centre in the whole of London and it is in Croydon - I wonder where her constituents go for support?
If you live in her constituency please write to the local paper and let them know you would like her to sign.
