The Sun attempts to body-shame Mariah Carey with stupid slideshow

carey.gif

Via Tabloid Watch, comes this ridiculous story in The Sun, calling Mariah Carey “huge”.

Yeah, really.

They even put together a slideshow, with moment-by-moment snapshots of some dancers apparently “struggling” to lift her during a TV performance.

Looking at the combined muscle the blokes had to use to hoist her off the ground, it might be better for Mariah to stick to floor routines from now on.

She’s getting too heavy to Carey.

OMG, the hilarous puns! They also caption another photo “big star”.

I like her size. She looks very beautiful and relaxed and comfortable with her body. She was smaller when she was younger and more busy but now she with less pressures she seems to be herself. IMO
Fed up of people making curvy women to feel fat. Where i come from it's the opposite. Being small is kind of a problem especially when you are a mother or older. *sighs*

Yet another example of pseudo newspaper Sun engaging in misogynistic women hating. I suggest The Sun engage in 'shaming a male celebrity for being overweight' since apparently we live in a culture wherein women have supposedly achieved full human status. What is good for the goose is good enough for the gander!

She looks a perfectly healthy size from where I am.

I don't except much from The Sun, but this is nasty stuff even by their gutter standards.

@JenniferDrew

actually they (in this case Heat) do. Both Jack Nicholson and Peter Stringfellow have been subject to vile invasion of privacy, in swimwear, no less

... yet we've seen noticeably larger women lifted by dancers in Strictly Come Dancing.

Obviously, Ms Carey is perfectly liftable or they would not have arranged for such a stunt. But the media never let a little thing like reality rain on their women- and fat-hating parade...

Well, the Sun and other tabloids have a long history of this sort of thing, so it’s hardly surprising. Any woman larger than a skeleton is too fat. Except when they’re doing a shock-horror thing about anorexic models, when some women are suddenly too thin. So, it’s good to be really really thin, unless the tabs decide you are too thin - except that if you are too thin and then put on a tiny bit of weight, you are instantly deemed to be a porker who has let yourself go.

Not sure men are immune either, though. Any previously slender male celeb who dares to put on a few pounds is equally likely to be sneered at, especially if they can get a picture of him in his swimming trunks.

lisa l - that's a bit unfair, the moderators at the f word can't be expected to monitor the site for 24 hours seven days a week, and if you comment late at night/early in the morning, sometimes you have to wait an hour or two for a comment to get on the site. considering they work and this site is run by volunteers i think they do really well in getting all the comments up with reasonable speed. they also always seem to put up a fair range of opinions, and your point is valid, invasion of privacy of male bodies is a big problem, as it is with women. on cif or some other sites your comments go up straight away, but because the f word need to moderate comments to make it a safe space this isn't possible.

anyway - in terms of the image, i saw it on tabloid watch...the sun is just being so woman hating, i'm no mariah fan but she cleary isn't large and if you look at the picture it doesn't take "3 dancers" to lift her anyway, one of them is just dancing. so stoo-pit!

Lisa L and Kez are right when they say men are not immune. I don't give a toss about the creepy likes of Jack Nicholson and Peter Stringfellow (YUK!) being snapped in their swimwear. But what I thought was truly disgusting was that a few months ago the Daily Hate photographed and did a feature of John Travolta, mocking him for having put on a lot of weight since his son's death. That was bad even for them. Picking on a grieving father, f.f.s!

So other than the fact that it only took 2 of them to lift her, and both of those dancers seemed to be using one hand to do the actual lifting and the other to keep her balanced, and they didn't drop her - i.e.: not struggling, and she's clearly fairly petite, it's an entirely accurate and necessary story from the sun.
Idiots.

Lifting anyone of any size is clearly a difficult activity that requires almost gymnastic ability in the lifter - *if* the dancers were 'straining' to lift Mariah that's nothing to do with her weight. This weekend I saw the men in the cheerleading squad at my university lifting a woman cheerleader in some routines - it took two men to lift a very petite young woman.

So well done to anyone who has the balance and strength to lift someone 7 feet in the air!

Anyway, even if she was the size of a house, which she clearly isn't, I don't see what it's got to do with the Sun. Nobody's asking them to lift her.

Also, the Sun caption writers are evidently unable to count to three, as there are quite clearly only two men actually lifting her, and they don't look to be complaining.

Why SHOULD two guys be able to lift her up? Were women evolutionarily designed to be lifted overhead by two men? Did this help proto-humans pick blackberries from tall trees and create look-out posts for leopards? No it didn't. Humans were evolutionarily designed to be able to carry CHILDREN. Ms Carey is an adult. She can probably chew her own food too.
