26 March 2011: March for an Alternative to cuts – Access and disability

March for the Alternative logoThis Saturday, 26 March 2011, sees the March for the Alternative taking place in central London. The march will form up from 11am on the Victoria Embankment between Waterloo and Blackfriars bridges and proceed through central London until reaching Hyde Park, where the rally will start from around 1.30pm. The march is organised by the TUC who say it will be “the first national mobilisation against spending cuts viewed as unfair, too deep and too quick by a majority of voters” [via]

A dedicated website – March for the Alternative – has been set up and has a lot of information on the reasons for the march, as well as plenty of detail and practical information on the logistics: where and when the march is taking place, assembly points and times, and so on.

When the march was first announced, concern was voiced at the lack of information on access for disabled people, most notably in this post on the Where’s the Benefit? blog. Thankfully, the March for the Alternative site went on to publish an Access and Disability page setting out what the TUC is doing to “make the March for the Alternative as accessible as is practical“. This includes a short march point and a static protest.

Where’s the Benefit? then covered the TUC’s commitment to providing access for disabled people in more depth and as a result, Disabled People Against Cuts (DPAC) announced that it will be participating in the demo.

DPAC has set up a dedicated Facebook event to provide up-to-date details and has a Buddies for Rallies page on its site to put “those who wish to go to rallies but need support – in terms of company, transport, accommodation etc” in touch.

Beyond Clicktivism and DPAC have also teamed up to produce an online map in solidarity for disabled people who cannot make it to the rally – this page explains how to send an email protest to show solidarity with the protestors on the march.
