Robert Kilroy-Silk demands women are admitted to mosques
Louise Livesey // 13 February 2007
Never one to avoid controversy, Robert Kilroy-Silk (MEP) has written to Meg Munn (MP) to demand she takes action on women’s exclusion from some mosques. On Radio 4’s today programme this morning he blasted Islam as “tribal and backward” (see the 8.50am listen again slot) before demanding that this be seen as a gender equality issue.
Of course we all wait with baited to breath to see whether he will also write to complain about male only private members clubs and other bastions of western male privilege or whether he’s only interested in the “others” in society. Something tells me he may only complain about gender exclusion when it doesn’t force him to understand the elements of purdah in Western society too.
