Tattoo ladies on the TV

If tattooed ladies are still a bit taboo, how about ladies that tattoo? I have to admit, in all of the times I’ve been to tattoo parlours, I’ve rarely seen a female tattooist at work.
So, I was pretty intrigued when I read about LA Ink over at Kindly Póg Mo Thóin. It’s a reality TV show about a woman setting up a tattoo shop in LA – apparently she was on some other reality TV show about tattooists too, but got kicked out.
As Zuzu says in her post, there’s a fair bit of “sneaky feminism” in the show – or at least some revealing insights into what it’s like to work in a sector almost completely dominated by men. She gets two other female artists to agree to work with her, and out of the three of them, none have ever worked with another woman before. Although they all seem to be really experienced tattooists who have been doing it for years.
I’ve got to say, the show itself is a tiny bit weird: all of the main tattooist (Kat)’s clients seem to be actors, musicians or other people with stuff to hawk. You can’t help but wonder if they are getting the tattoo because their agent thought it would be a good idea to be on the show. Which, by the way, is a terrible reason for getting inked.
Nonetheless, it’s definitely one to watch out for!
