Good news for Rape Crisis

// 19 March 2008

Although not an end to rape which would be the ideal….

Harriet Harman, Minister for Women, has announced £1,000,000 in cross-departmental funding to help save Rape Crisis Centres. AS End Violence Against Women and Rape Crisis has pointed this can only be a first step into long-term funding strategy for ending violence against women, but it’s a start. It comes hot on the heels of a New Statesman campaign about the problems of postcode lotteries in rape and domestic violence provision.

There are currently only 39 Rape Crisis centres in England and Wales, eight of which have no secure funding beyond this year. Another nine have closed over the last five years.

Good news indeed!

It’s about time the government sat up and took notice of Rape Crisis and all the fantastic and vital work they do.
