Lithuania considers abortion ban

// 21 April 2008

Apparently, Lithuania is considering a ban on abortion. This has been pretty much covered at Feministing so I’m not going to say too much about it here.

How utterly depressing. There are three countries in the EU that have a ban on abortion – Ireland, Poland and Malta. And in Nicaragua, Chile and El Salvador, abortion is banned under any circumstances, even when the woman will die from continuing with the pregnancy. Horrendous. And as feministing points out, in practice it is poor women who suffer the most as they do not have the option of seeking treatment abroad.

This map, courtesy of Wikipedia, indicates the state of abortion laws around the world.

Does anyone know of charities or initiatives that we can support to help women in these situations? For example to provide financial assistance for poor women to travel and pay for treatment, or whatever else can be done to assist them? I have heard that such organisations exist, but can’t seem to find any details.

I don’t know about many, but I know that Women On Waves travel around the world to provide abortions just offshore of countries where they are illegal (which is not illegal in itself), and have a fantastic site:

They have a lot of information, so I think it’s a brilliant site to check out.
