Thank a second wave (old) feminist if…

// 21 May 2008

Daisy has posted what I think is a rather wonderful piece on her blog, and when I finally get to be Empress of the Universe (next week sometime, if my plans for world domination succeed!) – it will be emblazoned on T-shirts, tea towels, hot-air balloons, the lot…

But while you’re waiting, please go and have a look at it.

To quote Daisy:

This post was inspired by the young feminists who seem to believe they have invented feminism and have nothing to learn from women over 50. Well, I have some news for you. As Kevin McCarthy famously said at the end of ‘Invasion of the Body Snatchers’: You’re next!

Abso-fucking-lutely!!!! I remember when my mother got her driving licence around 1970 she couldn’t buy the car she wanted without having my father’s signature on the hire purchase agreement. Notwithstanding the fact that she was going to pay for it herself. He refused to sign, so she had to get a much smaller, cheaper car that she could pay cash for.

And my sister got some office job where they paid her less than the man who’d done the same job before her, just because she was female, even though everyone admitted she did the job much better. As well as doing the job better, she also made the tea and coffee! Not long after that I bought my first copy of Spare Rib.

Thank you, Helen G. for bringing Daisy’s post to my attention. I also love all your posts, and you’ll certainly get my vote for becoming Empress of the Universe!

amazing but…

‘unabashedly enjoyed pornography, football, boxing, or other traditionally male entertainments.’

I might take issue with this one… porn? and boxing? enjoying watching m/f and m/m or f/f violence… (I realise that there is queer porn, and non violent porn out there, but it is in the vast minority. Equally if there is a type of boxing that is non violent and just involves 2 men* tickling each other someone should let me know, I would gladly watch that) – but am not sure enjoying something as (generally) opressive as porn is something to thank 2nd wavers for.

* or women, as a hetero I would find the former more appealing tho…

I would say it’s more about being able to enjoy porn or sports without being judged – obviously you would still have standards and taste: I enjoy clothes but there is a very narrow selection of garments I would actually wear.

yes I guess her point was that you can enjoy these things without being judged, I just think porn in particular is a bad example – as it isn’t really about taste or standards , the porn industry does make millions out of female degradation, similarly boxing promotes violent masculinity… the fact that I don’t like these things goes beyond mere taste.
