Easy activism, and dickhead of the day.

Reaching for the as ever non-existent toilet roll in a club last night, I noticed a sticker on the dispenser which simply read “Sheffield Rape Crisis” followed by the helpline number. Someone had written “Thanks, this really helped me” on it, and another woman had added “ditto”. It’s a great idea – so get printing and sticking! You can buy labels from Staples, and Publisher has a template for all the standard label sizes so it’s really easy to do. Rape Crisis phone numbers can be found here.

While we’re on the subject, can I just say a big fuck you to the guy in Sheffield station earlier today who was wearing a bright yellow t-shirt with “RAPE!” written on the chest. You’re lucky I was busy waving off a friend, or you’d have really got an earful.

Comments From You

Hmm, the could have been commenting on the rape of our nation by New Labour’s corporate buddies – just a thought, although I guess he wa in Sheffield which kind of undermines my own point…

Hmmm… maybe that was supposed to be funny, but any pun on the word ‘rape’ isn’t funny, nor is using it to refer to something else. It’s disrespectful to victims to compare political fallout or anything else you don’t like to rape. You don’t live in fear of it, you don’t have a high chance of experiencing it, hence you don’t get to cheapen it by applying it to anything you feel like. It doesn’t matter if it’s injest, or if you’re trying to put accross some idiot’s opinion. If you don’t condemn such word use, it’s little different to accepting it.

I just wanted to remind him that at least 1 in 20 women he walked past that day would have been raped, and it’s really not funny to be reminding them of that, let alone implying that their experience is hilarious.
