Friday Flickr

// 20 June 2008

It’s Friday afternoon. There’s plenty of horrible things going on as usual. But, well, enough is enough some times. So here’s some inspiring photos from Flickr, all shared under Creative Commons licenses.

Mural of Rigoberta MenchĂș Tum in San Francisco – photo by kalyan3. A lot of my family lives in the Bay Area, and when I go I almost always stay in the same place, around the corner from this beautiful mural. But I didn’t know it was of a specific person, no less Nobel Peace Prize winner MenchĂș – according to Wikipedia, she “has dedicated her life to publicizing the plight of Guatemala’s indigenous peoples during and after the Guatemalan Civil War (1960-1996), and to promoting indigenous rights in the country”.

Photo of this mural painted by the Hestia collective, of the history of women in Northampton (US not UK) by Luvzdollz. This is just a detail, but you can see the full piece here. You can read about it here

Titled “When women pursue justice”, I can’t tell where this one’s located. Click here for a bigger version, to see the detail. Photo by animalvegetable.

Photo by Peter John Chen, of signs put up by local community in Edmonton.

Photo of feminist loo, possibly at the University of Hull, by NataliaEnvy.

There is a very similar toilet design in one of the women’s toilets in the Renfrew Street Cineworld, Glasgow.

Exact same design, but the quotes are about women by movie industry people (Woody Allen, etc). The quotes are shit.

It’s not at the university (sadly, our toilets are not that nice!) but at the Cineworld toilets, presumbly in Hull as that’s the tag!

It does make me wonder what quotes they have all over the men’s toilets though!
