Man sentenced to eight years for second wife stabbing

// 13 June 2008

An Ohio man has been sentenced to eight years for attempted murder, after stabbing his wife, we learn through The Curvature and abysstohope.

That sounds like a low sentence, does it not?

Well, consider this.

Joseph Groth had already served one year in prison (one year!) for murdering his first wife – by stabbing her. And he may have stabbed one of his daughters as well.

As Cara says:

So let me get this straight: a man stabbed his wife to death. He admitted as much. Then he served a mere one year in jail. And wait, you’re telling me that he then later stabbed another wife, as though he could just stab wives all he wants and not expect any real consequences? NO WAY!

It’s nice to see how much women’s lives are valued. One year for stabbing his wife? What was his defence, she was nagging him? I don’t want to know, but it’s depressing. This man has clearly and repeatedly killed women close to him. How on Earth could any juducial system consider him a low enough threat to society to give him such a low sentence?

I have issues with the prison system, and would like to see more rehabilitation and support for inmates, to try and prevent more crime and hurt. The system’s far from perfect. But that doesn’t mean that with the current system we should let repeat offenders who kill women practically walk free!

So in 8 years he is free to re marry and re-stab, well that makes sense. It’s hardly a one off is it? (not that thats any excuse but you know what I mean) He obviously has some deep seated issues against women and needs help. I suspect that 8 years in jail is not going to do that.

This doesn’t surprise me one iota. I was reading an article the other day (in the Independent I think) that said those men charged with murder who betrayed hostility to their dead spouses, received more lenient sentences than those that expressed remorse. There was also the case cited that a man who murdered a prostitute who laughed at his penis, received a SIX month suspended sentence, because it was held to be just provocation!

Really, some days I think Andrea Dworkin was right– women need to carry guns around. (Although I know I’d never use mine). Its a dangerous time to be female.
