Virginie Despentes to speak on femininity

// 10 December 2008

The director Virginie Despentes is speaking at the ICA in London next year, about her new book which argues, from her experience working in porn and prostitution, that “feminism is needed to rip away the trappings of femininity in a society obsessed with consumption and packaging”.

And here’s the full description:

Notorious for her rape-revenge novel and film Baise-Moi, Virginie Despentes is at the ICA to present ideas from her new book King Kong Theory. A trenchant new defence of feminism, shaped by her experiences in the porn and prostitution industries, the book argues that feminism is needed to rip away the trappings of femininity in a society obsessed with consumption and packaging. Despentes will be in conversation with Zoe Williams, columnist at The Guardian.

Has it taken all this time for this to be translated? It’s been out for at least a year and a half.

It has some interesting notions, but I resent the fact that she attributes anything good that has ever happened to her to masculine qualities-in French at least she seems to dismiss anything female as useless.

It took me a while to verbalize this, but there was always that part of her book that made me extremely uncomfortable.

I feel like it sends us back to male=sun, active,etc,female=dark, passive, etc.

And I’ve always found that to be somewhat of an oversimplification.
