Women of Bletchley Park

// 6 July 2009

The folks behind Ada Lovelace Day have another interesting event up their sleeve later this month.

Women of Bletchley Park on 26 July, will look at women’s contribution to the (second world) war effort at the famous site where Alan Turing helped develop the Enigma Machine, which cracked the German Enigma code.

The day will include a tour of Bletchley Park by Jean Valentine, and a tour of the National Museum of Computing, including the Colossus and the Bombe. There will be a hands-on Enigma machine demonstration and maybe even a visit to Station X if numbers allow.

Tea, coffee, biscuits and lunch are included in the ticket price of £19.

When & Where

Sunday, July 26, 2009 from 11:30 am – 3:30 pm

Sadly Bletchly’s too far away for me to make this event, but it’s brought to mind a woman who came into the shop I worked in when the film Enigma (starring Kate Winslet, amongst others) came out. She’d picked up the wrong purse and explained that she was heading to the cinema to see the film because she’d worked in Bletchly at that time and wanted to see how true the film was. Sadly, I was too dumbstruck to be able to say much, I wasn’t ever expecting to be serving cards to someone who probably played such important role in the Second World War at any point of my life. And I’m still dead chuffed that it was a woman…

Hi, I’ve been a lurker on here for a while, really love the site!

I live in Bletchley, so I’ve been to Bletchley Park a few times, but I’m going to try & make it to this event! Feminist events rarely happen here (as far as I know) so it’s a great opportunity!
