Haiti earthquake, if you want to donate

// 13 January 2010

Haiti has been hit by a devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake, and thousands of people may be dead.

This is just a quick post to note Liberal Conspiracy has a list of disaster relief charities working in Haiti.

To add to this, Madre, which works direct with local women’s organisations, is asking for donations:

MADRE has activated an emergency response through our partner organization, Zamni Lasante Clinic. The doctors, nurses and community health workers there are working to get bring medical assistance and supplies to areas that have been hardest hit.

The most urgent needs right now are bandages, broad-spectrum antibiotics and other medical supplies, as well as water tablets to prevent cholera outbreaks. The need for food, shelter and other types of relief are growing by the hour.

The Haiti Emergency Relief Fund is another option. Via Black Looks:

Since its inception in March 2004, the Haiti Emergency Relief Fund has given concrete aid to Haiti’s grassroots democratic movement as they attempted to survive the brutal coup and to rebuild shattered development projects. We urge you to contribute generously, not only for this immediate crisis, but in order to support the long-run development of human rights, sustainable agriculture and economic justice in Haiti.

I shall of course be donating to help these desperate people. i hope that the future is bereft of the wrong political interfering and that they are given the proper infrastructure to live decent lives. My worry is that ‘disaster capitalism’ will prosper further impoverishing the indigenous population.

I want to also add that I was distressed by the photo of the young girl being carried that is in the media. She was obviously seriously injured and being carried to safety and medical treatment. The Daily Mail showed all the photo and you could see her vulva. The Guardian had the same photo, cropped, on the front cover with her dignity (what little was left) preserved. Did the Mail really have to show the full photo? Am I the only person who was offended by this? Would this photo have been shown in full if the woman was white? So angry.

@maggie – agreed. Saw it and it gave me yet another reason to never read that paper ever again.

Great Idea, will check with my company about the donation.
