UK Feminista launch

// 23 March 2010

UK Feminista is a new feminist campaigning organisation aimed at bringing UK feminists together to fight for an end to gender inequality. It was co-founded by Kat Banyard, author of the recently published Equality Illusion. UK Feminista will provide campaigning resources and training, act as a bridge between activists at a grassroots level and women’s/feminist organisations, facilitate links between activists, profile and celebrate feminist activism in the UK and promote public awareness about gender inequality and the need for feminism.

UK Feminista launches this Saturday, 27 March at The Women’s Library in London, 11am – 3pm:

Come along and find out more about how you can get involved in UK Feminista. Listen to inspiring campaigners, find out about different feminist organisations, and share your ideas for UK Feminista!

Speakers include:

Hannah Pool, the Guardian

Darinka Aleksic, Abortion Rights

Frances Carlisle, Latin American Women’s Rights Service

Katie McGrainor, Birmingham Fems

Olivia Bailey, NUS Women’s Officer

The event is free to attend, and you can RSVP by emailing kat[at]

(The Facebook event info indicates that children are welcome, but doesn’t mention a creche. I’ve left a message asking if there will be one and will update when I hear back.)

I wish I still lived in London! There’s actually some feminist activism there! Slightly OT, but does anyone know whether there are any feminist groups or organisations of any kind in the South East? (Berks/Bucks/ Oxon area?) I’ve not come across any…

start one up kate! all it takes is a facebook page and a mailing list and you’ll be away! helping run BFN is one of the most rewarding things i do, (although it is hard work esp as i work full time) and you’ll be amazed at the amount of people who are looking for these groups

Yes! I set up Sheffield Fems with a woman I met through the ukfeministaction yahoogroup. Hopefully UK Feminista will be able to help you find feminists in your area, I think that’s one of its main aims – looks like you’ll be able to create a profile and chat to other feminists through the site.

I would point out, however, that it’s important not to limit any advertising you do to facebook or the internet, as that can prevent you reaching many people (often those who already feel excluded from the current feminist movement, such as older women).
