Calling Leeds-based Feminists

// 21 April 2010

We have received the following email from Rosie – all those who are interested in getting together should get in touch via Facebook or turn up to the inaugural meeting:

There is some very exciting work to establish a Leeds Feminist Network (LSFN). The intention is to have a get together once a month for sd-women to come together to talk, meet one another and plan. The intention is that it will also provide an opportunity for local groups to make contact with one another.

Check them out on facebook (search: Leeds Feminist Network)

The 1st meeting will be on Thursday May 13th 7pm (for a 7.30pm start) until whenever! At the Victoria Hotel pub, 28 Great George Street, LS1 3DL (behind the Town Hall). This meeting will be in the ‘Albert Room’ so go straight ahead through the main door.

FeminaErecta // Posted 14 May 2010 at 8:42 am

Just like to say a massive massive thank you to the organisors of last night, there were loads a loads of us there, it was great to meet such inspiring women doing fantastic things in the community and, noise from the abr withstanding, everyone had a great night. Really looking forward to next months.

Do you live in the Huddersfield/Halifax area? I’ve recently moved here and am trying to start a feminist group based in Huddersfield as I can’t find any activist groups to get involved with.

I’ve no pre-set ideas for what the group should be like, but I’ve plenty of ideas for things we could do! At the moment I’m just looking for local like-minded people so that we can get together and start fighting sexism in the area.

I’ve made a website to get things started, so if you’re interested, have a look at, or email me at

Thanks guys!

Is this group still meeting? I’m not on facebook so any info appreciated. Cheers.

FeminaErecta // Posted 8 July 2010 at 3:54 pm

Hi Cactus, yes it is! Its actually tonight at 7 ish in the Victoria Pub (next door to O’Neil’s down the road from the LGI). There was some discussion last month about everything being on facebook and so a yahoo group has been set up with an email alert serice- its also been agreed to counter the digital devide meetings will always be the first Thursday of the month in the same place,so anyone who doesn’t have access to the internet or isn’t infomedia-literate (ie 30% of adult men and women over 30) will still be able to be involved. If anyone has experience of creating networks BEFORE the internet please please please come and tell us! There is also some discussion about a creche service being supplied and I’m going to be bringing up the idea of a weekend/venue that isn’t a pub (as this excludes any members of the community who do not frequent them) tonight as possible bi-monthy round up meetings.

Hope to see yous there!

Hi FeminaErecta, thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I won’t be around tonight but I’m looking forward to next month. I’ll have a look at the yahoo group.

FeminaErecta // Posted 9 July 2010 at 8:51 am

fantabuluos…well the creche idea is being discussed in the fb and yahoo groups now and we are def def gonna be orgnaising a feminist picnic at some point over the summer in a city centre location. Any one else in Leeds or surrounding areas, the next meeting is the 12th August at the Victoria Hotal meeting room on the left as you go in the pub.

Are you having another feminist meeting in Leeds soon? I’m an ancient feminist and don’t communicate via facebook or yahoo! Would love to come to… so would my teenage daughter … especially if not in pubs. Many thanks

hey, thought some of you might be interested in this upcoming event:

Leeds 2nd Queer Film Festival-

22nd – 26th September 2010

Five evenings of queer cinema… come for gender-bending cinema that makes you think… queer trash and horror in the campest of settings… features and shorts that take us beyond the queer ‘scene’… take in some history and current struggles in the queer world.

Queer Mutiny North is a D-I-Y collective that puts on free queer events and gatherings in theLeeds area. All film showings are free, donations are welcome but there will be no obligation; everyone welcome.

Queer: Defies definition, rejects restrictive gender and sexuality binaries, all inclusive and non exclusive, fluid and changeable, anti-heteropartriachy.

Money raised is going to Bent Bars, a letter-writing project for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, gender-variant, intersex, and queer prisoners in Britain. For info about bent bars:

Hi Becca,

I’m really sorry but at the moment the meetings are all held in the Victoria Pub in Leeds town cnetre. We have had several discussions about this, but its really hard to find venues that hire out rooms for free that are fairly accessable so we’ve said we’ll use the pub until after the Winter Holidays and then see where we are.

We’ve also had several debates about the use of facebook. I do not use facebook myself so rely on email/phone/word of mouth to find out whats happening. If you keep commenting on this thread though I will try to keep you up to date with whats occuring, just like tabitha did above- I’ll suggest that to the rest of the group (if thats cool with the f word team?)

Next meeting, 7.30 ish 7th October.

An Update:

The Leeds Feminist Network now meets on the 2nd Monday of each month.

We are currently without a permanent city centre venue but are working on it – monthly meetings will still take place but please check our events on our facebook page (or message us through our facebook page).
