Sorry! Don’t like it one bit.

Loved it, but with reservations. Though only really because I’ve read the book of ‘Fight Club’, and it’s not quite the same as the film…. so as a take on the film version of ‘Fight Club’, I love this, but in the back of my mind is the way that the film of ‘Fight Club’ kind of distorted the meaning of the book of ‘Fight Club’ – if you see what I mean…

Oh Alicia, thank fuck for that! I thought I was the only one.

Hah I think it’s fun.

@earwigca, I’m glad someone shares my sentiments.

I know that this is a parody of Fight Club, the film adaptation, more than the book I’m presuming, but I don’t see it anymore different than the ‘girls-with-guns’ trope, of getting what you want through masculinist means (read: fist fights, mindless violence). I am not saying that women are not capable of violence, hell no, but what we’re doing is ‘loving’ and ‘laughing’ at the things that women are *never expected* to be capable of. Regency women in billowy dresses who beat each other silly is supposed to be funny here but I’m not getting the joke. Enlighten me, please!!

I’m more than happy to hear criticisms from people who think that this is harmless, feminist fun.

@Alicia I see what you mean, but I think because it’s so clearly a satire it’s not actually advocating violence, but using the notion of (anyway consensual if violent) fights to undercut expectations of women of that time and place. It’s just so antithetical to the expectations of women at that time, it’s funny. Perhaps I’m just inured to pop culture violence though!

Feministe has posted a transcript of the video at http://www.feministe.us/blog/archives/2010/08/01/jane-austens-fight-club/.

(Posted this yesterday too but it got caught in the spam filter!)
