The Daily Telegraph keeps it classy with a blog post headlined “Ted Hughes’s pain will never be intense enough for the Sylvia Plath harpies”.

More women-hating from that white male-centric and male owned publication masquerading as ‘news.’

Ted Hughes’ so-called ‘genius’ supposedly supercedes his appalling treatment of the late Syliva Plath. But of course men’s ‘intelligence’ always justifies their male domination and violence against women. I’ve heard Hughes’ pathetic poem wherein he is supposedly the one devasted by Ms. Plath’s death. Yet another example of male self-pity and no mention anywhere in poem of Hughes’ accountability concerning how he mistreated Ms. Plath.

that is really offensive.

having done my uni dissertation on plath, and having read many books by MEN and women who have dedicated their academic careers to studying her poetry and writing, which is fantastic, moving, modern and ground breaking…ohh i am cross! people treat plath as if she is some curiousity, and yet she is one of the most brilliant writers of the 20th century.

as is ted hughes for the record. that poem is beautiful (the one just discovered) and full of genuine and terrible grief. just as plath’s poems are full of genuine and terrible grief. we are lucky to have these wonderful poems and this silly idea that you can’t love hughes and plath’s poetry is old hat, boring and stupid.

It is typical of sexists to call feminists ‘harpies’ but the idea that you’re a ‘harpy’ if you have a problem with actual serious abusive behaviour, and lean towards sympathising with someone who killed themselves a little more than the person who supposedly helped push her towards it, you’re some kind of unreasonable extremist whining nutter demonstrates not only sexism, but also a total lack of humanity.

Totally agree with Sianushka’s comments about Plath’s talent, and Hughes’s, too.
