Quick shout out to a new group: Black Feminists

Black Feminists is a new group set up in London recently. Here are the details:

Black Feminists is a group for all women (including trans women) who are African, Asian, indigenous, Latin American and/ or Middle Eastern or of these backgrounds. It offers a safe space for women to meet, discuss and explore our experiences, including the intersections of race and gender as it affects us. We meet next on Tuesday 14th December at 7pm in the Waterstone’s Piccadilly 5th floor cafe. Please email blackfeministsuk@gmail.com for more details.

why is it called black feminists when it is for all the women you mentioned. what is the differnce between this and womanists.

@nell I think they are using the term Black in the political sense that emerged out of UK-specific politics in the 1960s and 1970s. This piece on Black Feminism in the UK might help explain.

Womanism, by contrast, is a term created by Alice Walker and comes more out of the US/North American movement, partly in a rejection of the term feminism. Of course underlying both Black Feminism and Womanism are many similar ideas…
